Join the fight!

The only way that we can end the discrimination and have our rights restored is if we all stand together and fight.  The first thing you can do to get involved is to sign the petition at the bottom of this page.  When we reach a pre-determined number of entries we will begin printing out the petition and delivering it to all relevant parties in government.

Get everyone you know to sign this petition whether they're an ex-offender or not.  Our chances of winning this battle will increase with every new signature.

The response so far has been very motivating.  So many people have left messages saying that they were tired of the discrimination and they're ready to fight.  Not only that, but many non-offenders have offered to join the fight on behalf of someone close to them.

Our numbers are in the millions and counting.  Add our families and friends and our numbers are in the 10's of millions.  A single claim of discrimination will usually go unnoticed, but a few million ex-offenders and their extended families openly boycotting a company and its products cannot be ignored.  This also holds true for elected officials in government.

Do not buy from companies that discriminate against us.

Corporations need to know that if they’re not willing to consider us for employment, we will not buy their products, period!  They ask if you've ever been convicted of a felony at the top of the application, yet state at the bottom of the application that they are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.  OK, which is it?

The idea of losing millions of customers along with the collateral damage from bad publicity will force them to rethink their hiring policies.  Minority groups much smaller than ex-offenders have managed to successfully change public opinion and corporate policy, and as a result, change the law.  This can be achieved but only if we are fully united.

Spread the word

There are many people out there that are willing to support us in our fight and we need to reach everyone that we can. Our main goal is to have as many names on our petition as possible. Our supporters can be found and reached very easily online.  Thanks to the internet, everyone who could help us is just one click away.

In prison you were forced to be creative and resourceful.  If you can make a tattoo gun out of a walkman you shouldn't have any problem getting people to this site to sign the petition.  The more that people get involved, the closer we'll be to victory.

The internet is loaded with information about ex-offenders.  Anytime you see an article that is favorable to ex-offenders, send them an email.  If it's an online newspaper they will almost always have a link at the bottom that says "contact the editor" with an email address.
If not, click on the "contact us" page.  A simple two or three line email will do.

Here's what some other ex-offenders had to say:

Hi, C.J. I am so glad that I accidentally came across your website. I cannot tell you how I got to it. I think this is a great idea. I am a Sr. Legal Studies student here in Florida. I am an ex-offender. It has been over 20 years and I still get frustrated as hell because of the discrimination. You are right it has to be changed from legislative end. We must fight to become a member of the protected class like race, gender, age, religion. I guess that the proper place would be with the individual cities and then try to spread out. I know a lot of people who are ex-offenders and also getting more and more frustrated. Let me know what I can do to be a part of this National fight.

I was released from prison almost 2yrs ago and still am trying to find a job. Nobody will hire me because of my felony. But people wonder why there are repeat offenders. Maybe if we could get a job we wouldn't go back to prison.

i was on craigslist and just found this site. i think that it is wonderful. i have been off of parole for a little more than a year and the only type of job that i can find is min wage BK, Mcds and stuff like that. i know i am worth more than that but my felony hinders that. i would love to join the fight and any information that you have available would be very much appreciated as far as jobs or resources in suffolk county new york. thank you for your time

Nicole

I got railroaded into a plea deal that got me 1 felony conviction back in 2001. Today in 2009 i am still on probation and it sucks ass.  I have gone thru 2 trade apprenticeships in this state of AZ and when i have been more than qualified i still got passed over cause of my background.  I even stuck it to one employer who asked about a felony in the past 7yrs. I marked no cause its been longer than 7 years. The fucking snake did a complete background check and said i lied about it . I told him the app asked for the past 7 years did not say " have i ever been convited" tried to take him to court and the judge dismissed my case.  Its got to stop somewhere.  Tell me where to sign  thanks

Petition for Restoration of Rights

I am an ex-offender and I have paid my debt to society.  I am truly remorseful for what I have done and would like to redeem myself by being productive and earning an honest living.  I am requesting the restoration of my rights, as current laws supporting the criminal background investigation have made this nearly impossible.

Dear (editors name)

I recently read your article "Ex-offenders get 2nd chance"  and I think it's great.  You should check out a website called breaktheprisoncycle.com.  They're petitioning to help ex-offenders restore their rights and could use your help.  Thanks and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

(your name)
